The Larn Home Page
Introduction
This is the home page for larn, yet another of the many roguelike games. According to the Roguelike
Games FAQ, Larn is a good beginner game, but the executables are known to have exploitable bugs.
Ularn is a descendant of Larn, adding character classes.
About larn
Larn features a time-limited quest, and the original game has no character classes. The difficulty is
variable. Discussions about larn take place in rec.games.roguelike.misc.
On this site
Currently, the only things here are:
- The larn 12.2 sources.
Larn was archived automatically, since it was posted to comp.sources.games. Hence, it should be
available on lots of sites, not just the one linked to here. This is, of course, a directory with the UNIX
sources, not an executable. You should get all files in that directory, uncompress them, and follow any further
instructions in the headers of these news articles.
- Should the link above be busy, you can also try an ftp directory containing the Unix sources for an early version of
larn. It was last updated the 27th of July, 1986.
- The only "official" Msdos executable I could locate was version 12.3 (191 kByte), which was never
posted. Note that it is still in the original archive format: zoo format. See the compression directory for the zoo.exe program, which
you need to unpack zoo files.
- Larn for UNIX, ularn, is now also available (142
kByte). Ularn is the latest and greatest version of larn, as of 6/12/92. It's supposed to
be much improved over the version that was originally posted to comp.sources.games.
Ularn was written by Phil Cordier, who has
a website.
- An Atari version (version 1.2,
123 kByte) is available as well, courtesy the University of Michigan. Click here for the sources and
executables (237 kByte).
- There is also an Amiga version of
larn available. This is version 12.3 (with graphics, 254 kByte).
- Lastly, there is the VMS directory, which
contains the larn program for VMS, in executable form. You still have to paste together the induvidual
package files for them to function correctly. Sorry, but I cannot answer any questions about this: I'm no
VMS wizard. Refer to your sysop.
No FAQ or spoilers are known to exist for larn. If you know of any of these, please drop me a note.
